The revitalisation of the historic Hasselt Beguinage by Bovenbouw Architectuur and David Kohn Architects shows how contemporary architecture can extend heritage through precise material and spatial decisions. A key element of the transformation is the new 30-metre panorama tower, which redefines the ensemble without replicating the lost church tower.
For the tower and several newly constructed walls, Wittmunder Brick Type 151 was chosen. Its dense firing texture, subtle tonal variation and robust surface establish a contemporary material layer that aligns confidently with the historic brickwork. Rather than appearing historicist, Brick 151 adds a clear, modern stratum to the site.
The new brick walls play an important spatial role: they define pathways, frame courtyard edges and strengthen the sequence of outdoor spaces—central features of traditional beguinage typologies. With their clear material expression, they support both orientation and cohesion within the ensemble.
The project demonstrates how building within heritage can succeed through material clarity, architectural precision and a respectful continuation of existing structures.
Wittmunder Brick Type 151 contributes significantly to the renewed identity of the Hasselt Beguinage.
